Amsterdam Road Project Updates

April 29, 2021

We have received a few questions about whether Amsterdam Road will open below General to allow access to Bromley Crescent Springs Road once the base layer is down between Morris and General. This will remain closed until the project is complete. If we open Amsterdam before the project is complete, we will likely have a lot of traffic coming through, especially when northbound 75 is slow or stopped. First off, we cannot have all that traffic coming through the work zone. Second, if we allow the traffic to come through while work is being done between Morris and Redwood most of those vehicles will end up crossing through the Morris Road/Barrington area. We do not want to have that volume of traffic coming through those side streets.

Curbs were installed this week on the section of Amsterdam between Morris Road and General Drive and crews are working on driveway aprons. Eaton was scheduled to come in tomorrow to begin installing a base layer of asphalt. However, the forecast is calling for rain beginning tonight through tomorrow that could be heavy at times, so they have been rescheduled for Monday weather permitting.

The City of Fort Wright has contracted with Ford Development for the reconstruction of Amsterdam Road between General Drive and Redwood Drive. In addition to widening the existing pavement and adding curb and gutter, the project will include storm sewer improvements, and the addition of a sidewalk along the north side of the road. The project will be broken up into two phases with approximate schedules outlined as follows:

Phase 1General Drive to Morris Road. June 2020 – April 2021

This will consist of the construction of a retaining wall along the south side of the road, pavement replacement, storm sewer improvements, and sidewalk construction.

Phase 2Morris Road to Redwood Drive – April 2021 – October 2021

This will consist of pavement replacement, storm sewer improvements, and sidewalk construction.

During construction, Amsterdam Road will be closed to through traffic, with detour signs at Amsterdam Road & Sleepy Hollow Road, and at Amsterdam Road & Bromley Crescent Springs Road directing traffic along Sleepy Hollow, Route 8 and Bromley-Crescent Springs Road as a detour.

Additionally, during Phase 1 the intersection of General Drive and Amsterdam Road will be closed to traffic; and during Phase 2 the intersection of Fort Henry Drive and Amsterdam Road will be closed to traffic.

Local traffic will be maintained for residents of the area. All others are advised to seek alternate routes away from this area between June 2020 and October 2021. Please see the attached "Detour Map" by clicking here.
